JIM VICTOR FINISHES 13TH AT THE RUN
OFFS - 10/17/2006
During the FC race Jim Victor moved up through the field
from grid position 19 to cross the finish line at the
checker flag in 10th position. Due to an on track
incident involving flagging, Victor was penalized 3 positions, so the official
results list him in 13th place. No less, congratulations on a fine
race season!

Video
Wanted... Club Racers Especially! - 10/10/2006
I'm looking for some clips for the banquet. Digital is
preferred, but I can also get stuff off VHS and VHS-C.
I don't really need long clips, just short clips that
highlight your car or events you ran. This isn't
limited to 2006, it's for any event you ran over the GRR's
past 40 years. I'd also entertain still photos from
club racers if you have no video. For autocrossers,
ahem, Soloists, I could use either old footage or old
photos. If you have good, newer footage and it's
digital (DV tape or .avi preferred; .mpg may be accepted),
I'd welcome that too. Email: sshumard at essex1.com to
make arrangements.
Event 11 Results & Recap -
10/1/2006
Where were you?!?! We had a modest turnout today and
it was a great day to be out. The weather was perfect.
Jeff Meyer arranged a course you could love or "h8."
Some "L8" apexing was required. It's a course Dean
"F8" would have loved. How might one best describe the
layout of the course... hmm. It was like a
big figure 9 with the bottom loop closed too. Like two
0's stacked on top of each other. Anyhow,
check the result and updated
season points. Today was the 10th run event
(remember Event was cancelled due to weather), so that
means your 3 lowest runs are now dropped. That really
helps some of you that had one last low score dragging you
down.
Social Event - Kart Racing! -
9/26/2006
Our Asst Regional Exec, Paul Gilbert, has arranged for us to
go karting at the new 61 Kartway on October 3rd. Try
to arrive by 5:45ish for a 6 o'clock start. Cost is
roughly $40 and payable to the track. They accept
credit cards. So if you're a member and looking for
some real fun on Tuesday night, get your rear up to the 61
Kartway near Welton, IA. From the Quad Cities, head up
Hwy 61 to mile marker 149 and take the next right. You
should see the light standards for the track and some flags
from the road.
Please come prepared: The track
requires long sleeves, long
pants, closed toe shoes, gloves, helmets, neck braces and
eye protection. They have loaner helmets and neck braces,
the rest you’ll have to bring for yourself. For more
information please see:

Event 10 Results & Recap -
9/17/2006
The weather forecast was threatening, but it turned out to
be a nice day. We squeezed in 5 dry runs for each
group and the rain didn't really begin until about 3 seconds
after the last car finished. The
results are already
up, so dig in!
From the SCCA Headquarters:
At the
National Championship Runoffs this year, we are making a
special effort to get more SCCA members involved in our
club. There are a few programs already in place (the Region
Road Trip Challenge for one) that has generated a lot of
interest and some friendly competition among Regions.
One
program is what we are calling the SCCA VIP Volunteer for a
Day program. We will have a daily drawing, beginning
Thursday, for two non-licensed SCCA members (Temporary
Membership is included) to participate in a specialty of
their choice “up close and personal.” The members will
select which drawing they want to be part of, so hopefully
we will have two winners per specialty per day. The
intent is to bring that person right to the hub of activity
and merely be an observer in a position that won’t affect
operation of the specialty. We will also award two SCCA
renewals per day (eight total) of those that have entered
the drawings.
You
can come to the SCCA Membership Hub beginning Thursday of
Runoffs week for details!
Note the standings of our Club
Racers in the Sept Newsletter!
In case you missed it, some of our very own are having a
great year. Jim Victor is 1st in Regional Points for
FC and 3rd Nationally. Tony Specht is 3rd in Regional
FSCCA points. Congrats to all of our club racers!

formatted, tallied, converted, sorted and uploaded.

Labor Day Solo Event - 8/30/2006
Don't forget, our next Solo is at the Mt. Joy Airport Army

What better way to celebrate Labor Day than being a corner

Solo 2 Results Updated - 8/20/2006
Events 7 &
8 are up, and the
season total is updated
as well. The season points reflect your two lowest
events being dropped. If I erred, which of course is
highly unlikely, just send me a nicely written email, one
your high school grammar teacher would be impressed with,
explaining where my computer went wrong.
Further, if you're not familiar with
Soloist, Street Tire or Ladies scoring, there is an index
called the
Pax/RTP which we use to level out the fields between the
classes. If you are in STS or STX, the index accounts
for your street tires, so for soloist points, there is no
disadvantage because you are on them. So either you're
beating that stinking C-stock Miata or your not on your own
merit!

Stolen Car & Trailer!!! -
Updated!!!
By some miracle, the car and trailer
were both recovered. Tony Specht wanted to thank
everyone who kept an eye out for him. This is a good
time to remind everyone to make sure they're locking things
up as well as possible, and suggest making your no-descript
white trailers somewhat more easily identifiable so a thief
has a harder time blending in right away. If you have
a lot to protect, there are gps trackers for use on
trailers.

Update to Solo 2 Supplemental
Rules - 5/12/2006
There was a small update to help explain how the PAX/RTP
index works. Why is the index important? We use
the index to award bumped class, ladies class, street tire
class and novice class trophies for individual event
results. For the end of the year awards, the index is
used to score for Soloist of the Year, Street Tire, and
Ladies Class Awards. Follow the links for more on the

The RoadRally
Department is offering one heck of a deal to United States
Road Rally competitors this year. Each Region (yep,
111 of them) can authorize one USRRC Rally Team
per Region for a free Regional entry to
this year’s championships in Kansas. There are some great
driving roads here, and October is a beautiful time of the
year. Don’t pass up this opportunity to participate in our
national championship event, the third jewel of the
championship crown held in the grassroots motorsports
capital of the world! There isn’t any more to this

Iowa Challenge 2006 - 4/18/2006
The Iowa challenge is back, but it's on August 20th, a date
the GRR already has scheduled for a Solo2 points event.
Not sure how this happened as we just recently received this
notification and our calendar has been posted for some time.
First Solo II - 3/31/2006
UPDATE -
This event was cancelled due to heavy downpours, lightning
and the threat of severe weather. Hope to see everyone out there at Cordova before 10:15!
Be prompt. Possible afternoon storms, so we'll want to
keep moving!
We Have a New Site!!! - 3/31/2006
Thanks to a couple of members efforts, we have a new site
this year. You may have noticed John Deere isn't on
the schedule, but we hope that's just temporary. In
it's place, Corky did some talking and came up with a name
and Mike Whitney followed up the discussions and landed us
the Iowa National Guard's portion of the Mt. Joy airport.
Thanks to Mike and Corky for the new real estate!
We'll be there July 30 and Sept 4.
New to Autocross and
SCCA's Solo II? - 3/26/2006
We've got something for you! If you've not autocrossed
before and are looking for a reason to try, we've got a $5
coupon for you. Just print it and present it and
you'll get $5 off your first SCCA Solo 2 event with the
Great River Region. Learn more about Solo 2 and how it
works on our "First Time"
page, where you'll also find the coupon!
The Solo II season
is upon us!!! - 3/25/2006
There are some significant changes this year. First,
remember that M90 and SA90 helmets are no longer acceptable
for SCCA use. Secondly, in order to break even and
keep up with insurance, lot acquisition and sanctioning
costs, Solo II events will be $18 for members and $26 for
nonmembers. There will be a discount offer available
to first timers. Stay tuned for more details on that.
Newsletters back
online and newest edition online - 2/21/2006
I'll apologize one more time for the delay. I had
issues with my server that appear to be fixed now. Our
website host only gives us 10mb of space for hosting, so the
large files are stored on my home server. The good
news is I'm cheap (free), the bad news is you get what you
pay for! In case you missed it, Dean Fait
stepped down as editor due to time constraints and Naomi
Swanson picked up from there. So another big thanks to
Dean for years of volunteering for newsletter duty, and
thanks to Naomi for carrying on the torch. So check

Tentative Solo II
Schedule - 2/21/2006
The tentative Solo II Schedule for the 2006 season is
posted. We were not able to secure the John Deere lot
this year due to scheduling conflicts on their end, but they
have left the door open to using their lot again in the
future. The Whiteside County Airport has been pleased
enough with the way we clean up after ourselves that they're
allowing us 3 events there. This is a good time to
remind all that lots are not easy to acquire, so we should
be courteous, respectful and on our best behavior at events.
We're Back in
Business! - 2/16/2005
Sorry for the delays, but
we're up and running again. Look for newsletters and
updated schedules in the next week!!!
Web Server Issues -
January
My apologies for the lack of updates. One of the
servers had a minor hiccup. The newsletters are
temporarily offline, but will be back sooner than later,
I'll post an update when they're ready to go. The rest
of the website will remain up.
It's fairly quiet around the
region this time of year, but I know of at least one ice
racer in our ranks. For everyone else, have fun tire
shopping, mod tweaking and the rest. The Solo II
committee will meet soon to start work on the 2006
schedule... something to look forward to,
Also, the past few years,
we've held a social event to tie us over in the winter at
the F1 Indoor Karting Track. Unfortunately, they
closed. So if you have ideas on what you'd like to do,
share them with Jeff
Meyer! We eager to have your input!
Finally, if you're using an
M90 or RA90 helmet, they're no longer good for use with the
SCCA. Time to upgrade to M95/RA95 or newer!
Congratulations

Friendly Reminder to Pack Your -
7/29/2005
Not only is water important (at the very
minimum, a gallon) but so is motor oil! I think we've
lost two motors this year due to inadvertently running cars
low on oil. Take two minutes to check your oil level
and save yourself a couple grand and a lot of headaches.
July 31st Solo II Event is a Go!

Great News! We've received word that the July 31st

Friendly Reminder to Solo II
Participants!!! - 7/16/2005
It's hot, it's humid, you're standing in a
sea of pavement or asphalt, you need to drink lots of
water. One or two small
bottles won't cut it in these hotter months. Be
prepared as most sites don't have access to drinks..
July 31st Solo II Event Now
Tentative - 7/11/2005
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our
control, we may lose the use of the John Deere lot on
Sunday, July 31. Saturday's event will still be
run. Unfortunately, some construction work to
the area may prevent the lot from being used on Sunday.
We will keep you updated here. This site will remain
updated through the night of July 30th, so stay tuned for
details. If you're at the event on the 30th, we'll let
you know then what the status is. An email to the
current Solo II list will also be dispatched.
UPDATE: The event is going to be held
as originally planned!!!

In an ongoing effort to keep events moving and to maximize
the number of runs per event, we've made some minor changes
to times (15 minutes).
9:00a - 10:15a - Registration
9:15-10:30 Vehicle Tech Inspection.
Being prompt and having your car through tech inspection
before 10:00 helps to get more runs squeezed in. The
"First Time?" page has tips on how to
get through the morning and tech inspection quickly for
those that are new to Solo II with us.
F1 Karting Champ of the GRR... Paul Gilbert! -
3/14/2005
Congratulations to Paul Gilbert for showing everyone else
how it's done on Sunday. His fastest lap in the final
race was 3 tenths faster than the next quickest
competitor's. Also on the podium, Brian
Bunker finished 2nd and Jason Matthews followed in third.
It's safe to say everyone had a good time. Cindyann
Whitney was an excellent hostess for lunch afterwards.
If she should happen to offer to host again, just the lunch
and socializing afterwards is worth the price of the karting
admission. Thanks again Cindyann! Sorry for the
bad photos, but those of you that were there know the
lighting isn't primo.

Important Notice: Changes in Solo II Fees -
3/6/2005
The sanctioning cost from the national SCCA office has gone
up per entry, as has the insurance cost per entry. The
cost increases were significant enough that we could not
absorb them without changes in fees. The new event fee
will be $16 for SCCA members and $24 for non-members.
We did an informal survey of over 20 regions across the
country and found that even with these increases, we were
below the average for entry fee charges.
Your entry fees pay for insurance, SCCA sanctioning fees,
use of lots (lots cost up to a few hundred dollars to use
per event), Solo II trailer, cones, timing equipment (and
everything else in the trailer), plus portajohns, event
awards and year-end awards.
LAST CHANCE: Sign up for the F1 Indoor Karting

SOLO HELMET NOTICE - 3/1/2005
From page F-61 of the April Fastrack: "It has been brought
to the attention of the SSC that there are helmets being
manufactured and sold that have the statement “Snell
Approved” without the Snell Foundation sticker on the inside
of the helmet. It is the opinion of the SSC that these
helmets are not eligible for Solo II competition."

You Can Keep Your Solo II Helmet for Another
Season - 1/11/2005
Still using a M90 or SA 90 helmet? SCCA says your
melon is still safe and is allowing their use for another
year. THAT SAID, Snell recommends replacing helmets
every 5 years. Further, M2005 and SA2005 are scheduled
to roll out in October, so next year, M90 and SA90 helmets
will not be acceptable.
<---Link to Gear - 1/10/2005
While the region has a limited number of products at this
time, we've now published a list and pictures of what we do
have. Purchases can't be made online, but drop into
any Solo II event and visit Ryan Tone, Merchandise Chairman.
He will have 2005 rule books available.

moving to Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas for the next

lighting wasn't conducive to photo taking, hence the

Important News for Solo II Season Points! -
8/24/2004
Now that we're in the final stretch with just three events
to go, your "adjusted" point total has been added to the
sheet. GRR Season Points rules call for your two
lowest scores to be dropped if 9 or fewer events are run,
and 3 scores are to be dropped if ten or more are run.
Having had 8 events until now, your two lowest scores have
been dropped in the "Adjusted Total" column. So if
you've missed a race, or just had a bad day, you can now see
where you really stand with your competition.

Please please please help the Great River Region and Dean.
Dean sees to it that we get well over 200 copies of the

region then picks up the postage tab. The growing list
costs more and Dean's probably going to get carpel tunnel
before next season. The newsletters are now maintained
online in PDF format. Look up and to the right -->
If you're okay with reading the Internet version (which also
gets you the original color photography and graphics) please
email Dean Fait to let
him put you on the newsletter email list and to take you off
the USPS mailing list. Your email will not be sold or
used for solicitations. Any email list you join
through us will be used strictly for SCCA informational

Thanks to everyone for coming out. Sorry our voodoo
didn't keep the rain away. Anyhow, a few things were
left behind at the July 11 event at The Mark. First,
someone left a pair of gray folding chairs in the spectating
area. Second, a caster/camber plate was left in a box
with a t-shirt. Everything will be brought to the next
event at John Deere on July 31st and Aug 1st.

Social
Event - Should've Been There! - 2/29/04
Paul Gilbert showed everyone a thing or two.
A few guys missed the memo explaining the difference between
bumper cars and karts. And a few more found out they
were better off in bigger pony cars than in a 150lb go-kart.
No less, everyone was very complimentary of the Whitneys'
hospitality after the race. There was nearly as much
pizza, pop, and desserts as there was bullhockey at the
table! That's a lot!
